Hieatt as theorizing that in “Old Norse gull/goll, of which one inflected form would be gollum, means ‘gold, treasure, something precious and can also mean a ‘ring’.” There are other theories linking the name Gollum to Jewish folklore’s Golem, the root word for substance in Hebrew being ‘GLM’, but it seems to me more coincidental, although Tolkien did have a philological interest in Hebrew.
